I decided to create something of a series of lists, things I wish I could tell a younger version of myself, based on what I know now.
When I was eight, I moved to Cameroon. It was a tricky transition, and there were parts of it that were really hard.
Things I Wish I Could Tell 8-Year-Old Me
- You're going to make friends that are going to turn into family, and there is no getting around that.
- That boy that you thought was annoying and you're not actually sure your friends with, is going to turn into a really funny guy that you wind up dating, so be nice, and keep in mind you're gonna know him for a while.
- Don't be afraid of losing friends. Have your friends while you have your friends. It's painful to lose them, and it hurts, but don't be afraid of the pain.
- It's okay to be confident and sassy sometimes.
- Read. Read as much as you do. You're incredible. Be friends with books. Just don't hide in them.
- Keep an open mind about all of the transitions and new things you're experiencing. I know it's confusing and I know it's scary, but these people are nice and they love you, so let them teach you new things.
- Make friends with wrap skirts, they're a convenient clothing option.
- Be creative and have fun with your imagination! It's a gift!
